Scope of this guide
Includes an application note linked to official sources, not a completed regulatory review for every product category.
PRODUCT REVIEW IN PRACTICE
United Kingdom: product dossier priorities
For the United Kingdom, distinguish Great Britain and Northern Ireland sales scopes. Match the operator details on English-language packaging to the actual sales territory. When comparing with an EU label, do not assume the differences are limited to an address change.
United Kingdom: packaging and sales model
FSA guidance treats food prepacked for direct sale (PPDS) as a distinct category. Labels within this category carry the food name and a complete ingredients list, with allergenic ingredients emphasised in that list. A product prepared and packed at a café before sale should therefore not automatically be classified like a centrally packed product distributed to other premises. Define Great Britain and Northern Ireland destinations separately as well. Establish where and when packaging takes place before assessing the applicable sales and allergen rules.
How is the label review dossier prepared?
Collect artwork, recipe, allergen evidence and importer details for the same product version. Our working method explains the shared document-preparation and reporting steps.
Document preparation and working method
Label review: evidence and findings table
| Review scope | Evidence reviewed | Report output |
|---|---|---|
| Product name and class | Recipe, product form, intended use | Correct sources and review scope |
| Ingredients and allergens | Sub-ingredients, supplier and cross-contact records | Comparison of label text and evidence |
| Nutrition and claims | Analysis or calculation, serving, front wording | Data basis and claim evidence |
| Language and layout | Every face, local wording and supplementary label | Missing-information and readability findings |
| Import and traceability | Importer, lot, dates and shipment version | Document needs and local confirmation questions |
Sources and research method
Sources are selected research references. An archive record does not confirm current legal effect; national adoption of Codex texts requires separate verification.
